Chemical peels are powerful tools in the arsenal of skincare treatments, offering transformative results for addressing various concerns, such as hyperpigmentation and signs of aging. Proper patient preparation and post-peel care are essential to ensure the best outcomes and minimize the risk of adverse effects. Preparing patients before and after a chemical peel involves several essential steps and considerations. This includes identifying key ingredients to prepare and soothe their skin, recommending a personalized homecare routine, advising on precautions, and offering a selection of your own branded products private-labeled from Global Beauty to support these objectives.

Pre-Treatment Preparation:

Consultation and Skin Assessment:

Conduct a thorough consultation and skin assessment to evaluate the patient’s skin type, skin concerns, and medical history.

Determine the appropriate chemical peel program based on the patient’s skin condition and treatment goals.

Educate the patient on the importance and benefits of pre and post-care.

Pre-Peel Homecare Regimen:

Consider creating a package that includes several pre and post-care products that are included in a peel series.

Advise patients to discontinue retinoids – Retin-A, Renova, Tazorac, and Differin one to two weeks before the peel.

If hyperpigmentation is being treated, recommend skin lightening/brightening agents be started at least 1-2 weeks before a peel program.

Consider recommending an AHA resurfacing home care product before the peel program that can be used up until 2 days before the peel. Products we recommend retailing would be the Exfoliating Pads, 10% Glycolic Smoothing Lotion, or the Glycolic & Lactic Resurfacing Gel. By removing the superficial layer of dead skin cells, AHAs can enhance the efficacy of the chemical peel. This allows the peel solution to penetrate more effectively into the deeper layers of the skin, maximizing the peel’s exfoliating and rejuvenating effects.

Post-Treatment Care:

Immediate Post-Peel Care:

Provide patients with post-peel instructions, precautions, and a skincare routine.

Advise patients to avoid excessive sun exposure and extreme temperatures during their healing period.

Homecare Products:

Recommend gentle, hydrating cleansers and moisturizers to maintain skin hydration and support the healing process.

Recommend post-peel homecare products containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and antioxidants to promote skin healing and reduce inflammation.

Encourage your patients to use serums or creams containing peptides, growth factors, and other actives that aim to stimulate collagen production and accelerate skin regeneration.

Sun Protection:

      • Stress the importance of diligent sun protection to prevent UV-induced damage and minimize the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
      • Recommend broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and advise patients to reapply especially when outdoors.

Precautions for Successful Outcomes:

Avoid Over-Exfoliation:

Advise patients to avoid using abrasive scrubs or exfoliants during the post-peel recovery period to prevent irritation and compromise skin barrier function.

Minimize Sun Exposure:

Advise patients to limit sun exposure and wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses when outdoors to prevent UV-induced skin damage.

Monitor for Complications:

Instruct patients to contact your office immediately if they experience persistent redness, swelling, blistering, or severe discomfort after the peel.

Proper patient preparation and post-peel care are crucial aspects of ensuring successful outcomes in chemical peel treatments.
